Brief magazine analysis.

This magazine is called "Ebony" and is primarily aimed at women aged around 18 to 30. I think this because the image of Beyonce on the front is quite a mature pose. Every woman aspires to be like Beyonce because she gives the impression of a strong, independent woman.  Also, the colour palette is quite dark and doesn't use bright colours. Magazines aimed at younger people tend to be bright and colourful in an attempt to draw them in and capture their interest.  I also think that it is aimed at women aged 18 to 30 because the sell lines are about jobs, children and money. For example, "Does work make you angry?" and "Who's watching your kids?". These sell lines wouldn't be included in a magazine aimed at a younger audience as they wouldn't normally have children at that age and the majority are still in education until the age of around 18. It could be said that these sort of sell lines could be aimed at men of a similar age group, but I think that the primary audience is still women because the tone of the magazine gives the impression of 'girl power' or 'women power'. Beyonce is standing boldly and confidently with her fist facing the camera giving the impression that she is independent. This is inspirational to many women who struggle with the balance of housework, looking after their children and having a career. This impression makes me think that the magazine has quite a Feminist view of things and it would be quite interesting to see if this ideology is apparant throughout the magazine or if it is just on the front cover in an attempt to draw a specific target audience in.

Introduction

For my AS Media coursework I have chosen to create a music magazine. I have been looking at magazines such as "NME", "Kerrang" and "Q" for inspiration. As I like Indie/alternative music I am going to use that genre. I like the how the masthead stands out in "NME" and I hope to make mine stand out just as well. I like the colour palette of both "NME" and "Kerrang" as I find that red and white are colours that work well together. However I also like the use of black that "Kerrang" uses too. I want to keep my magazine cover clear and simple looking so I will experiment with different fonts and sizes until I am happy with the appearance of it.
